Practice, Then Let Go

I always encourage the storytellers in our live shows to prepare by writing their script, learning it in its entirety, and then letting go of it. Essentially, I’m encouraging them to wean themselves off their written story script leading up to a performance. I do the same when I’m giving a talk, a presentation, or leading a training. If you have ample time before your own event, read over what you’re planning to say for a while, just to get the fluidity of it in its entirety. Then start thinking of it in chunks of information: What are the main points you want to get across? Can you then break that down into a written (then a mental) set of bullet points? If you’re dealing with slides, the same can still apply—what are the big points or ideas you want to hit? Lastly, step away from your notes completely. Yep, put them in a drawer or the trash. Run through your talk while standing in front of the mirror. Walk around the block. Let yourself go with the flow instead of obsessing about details. There is a point where we reach diminishing returns—where practicing and focusing more actually makes us feel more nervous and less confident.
